The evening's golden sun shine through the upper floors of the Corner Street editorial building in Runnington, England, a newer town that had appeared in the early 21st century, an the head editor just finished reading one of his writer's works. A youthful looking man, his fair and almost unblemished skin often suggested him to be several years younger, and even younger when he was shaven as he was this evening. His brown hair was messily hand combed over to one side. He lifted his glasses and rubbed his eyes, then, after replacing his glasses, stared at the ceiling with his deep hazel eyes.
"Well?" said the young author who was sitting at a desk a couple feet from the editor.
"You’ve been practicing your writing skill. There weren't many errors," the editor replied, "But you need a better topic. This babbling of werewolves and vampires is getting old, John"
"You might say so, Xavier," John laughed, "But you haven’t seen them yet.
"Oh really," Xavier wondered, "And what monsters might we have running around our quiet town?"
"You didn't pay attention to my article," John complained, "It depends on the ones you meet, and the young ladies i met were quite kind."
"Xavier laughed, "Well, I'll find a place in the paper for your story, maybe next to the funnies," as he stood from his chair and put on his coat, "but this is the last time I'll have this non-sense in the paper, understand?"
"Perfectly," John replied.
The chilled air brushed across Xavier's cheek as he left the editorial building. The town was still quite small, only extending a couple streets from the park on all sides, but it was a decent place to live. Not many children lived within the town, so generally it was quiet with only the sounds of footsteps and the occasional conversation between people. But this evening, not a sole stood on the street but him as the evening sun strained to give out its last bit of light as it dropped beneath the horizon. A soft breeze blew by Xavier as he crossed the street to the park. At this time of the day the path could barely be seen because of the light that the dense tree cover blotted out, but there were light posts here and there that provided illumination. The cool night was refreshing to him after his long day. The stone path soon became a pebble walkway of numerous shades of grey and red. In the middle of the park was a small lake of which Xavier stopped at. He remembered his childhood, how him and his father use to skip stones across lakes when he was little. He picked up a small flat stone and tried his hand at it again for old time’s sake, and the stone flew over the water as it skipped several times before plumping into the lake. He continued to look over the lake as the ripples from the stone blurred the light of the stars into a reflective bliss. He gave a slight smile and a sigh before continuing down the path homeward.
It was very quiet in the park that night, like the town before he entered, and the lack of people somewhat unnerved him. John's article, still fresh in his mind, was making him uneasy. With a soft hum and a buzz the light posts on the path suddenly went out. Xavier stopped dead in his tracks, and the full moon now illuminated his face. With lightning speed something pasted by him in the trees just beyond leaving nothing but a soft rustling of bushes swaying back into place. Though he tried to keep calm, the quivering of his hand said otherwise, and was starting to believe that John was right. He looked around franticly at every sound. Though the moon shown bright and the path visible, the woods just beyond seemed to want to jump at him. Then, of in the distance, down the path a light could be seen. Xavier calm down a bit and started walking again. The light was coming from around a bend in the path, and as he got close the light came around it. With a brightness light the sun Xavier was almost blinded by the light shining right into his eyes.
"Oh, Entschuldigung sie," said a soft and young voice, "Ich did not see du da."
The light left Xavier’s face and his eyes adjusted to she a young female officer in her kakii summer outfit holding the flashlight. Her short ragged looking black hair and piercing blue eyes gave her an almost feral look, and he recognized her from a picture from an article in the paper.
"So you’re the new cadet on the local force," Xavier commented, "And as the article said, 'She can run like a cheetah, fight like a bear, and has the devil's luck.' That’s quite the reputation for someone new in this small town."
"Kom jetzt," she said looking to the side shyly, "du are machen mich blush."
Xavier gave a slight smile to her playful nature, "Well, I need to get going. It was nice to meet you, and good luck on your rounds," he said as he started walking.
"Vait ein minute," She said and Xavier turned to look at her, "I am nicht getan mit du jetzt."
She turned towards him, her ears now wolf like and eye vicious. Her hands now looked like claws. Xavier took a nervous step backwards as she looked at him with bestial hunger. He thought to run but before he could she lunged at him, her jaws open with a heinous smile. His eyes closed and he sensed her body grow near. Though he was lifting his arms, time moved so slow at the time that he felt petrified. Her arms wrapped around him as she pulled her body close. Standing there for a moment, Xavier was trying to make sense of what was happening. Her loving gasp of him was confusing if nothing else. He pushed her off of himself.
"You are a wierd one," Xavier remarked.
She giggled and said, "How about ich valk du home."
"Aren't you on duty?" Xavier asked.
"Nein, ich trage das uniform to get close to du."
Xavier sighed, barely able to understand her, and said under his breath, "Just my luck that beast girl here had to like me.
Then the police girl lifted one clawed finger to his throat and said, "Du might be viser halten das to yourself,"
while giving a smirk, "Sie verevolfs anger easily."
"Alright," Xavier said, his hand up by his shoulders
The police girl pulled her hand away and her body returned to normal.
"Since it looks like I can't get rid of you," Xavier said jokingly, "let's get going, Natascha was it?"
Natascha nodded and they started walking through the park. The full moon was shining brightly, as Natascha had put away her flashlight, lighting the pebble walkway, but it wasn't long before she caught a whif of something she didn't like. Natascha grabbed Xaviers arm and pulled him to her, growling quietly at the trees off to the left ahead of them.
"What is it?" Xavier asked.
Natascha let out a humanoidish bark and scared a bat out of the tree, then replied, "Jetzt ein bat."
But Xavier watched this bat picculiarly fly of straight toward his condo building.
